This was taken directly from an email I sent a friend, I will edit it later so it will be less letter like:
Every weekend this break thus far has been spent in some bar or DIY venue in Brooklyn, which obviously is an hour to 2 hours away (depending on the traffic). Today I decided to stay home and get shit ready since class starts on Monday, but so far I've been completely unproductive and quite depressed since I had absolutely nothing to do. I was about to sleep my boredom off, but that was also when I remembered that there was the monthly show at Dead Broke HQ, which is about 10 minutes away from my house, nestled in this quiet, strange, typical Long Island suburban hood. I had no idea what to expect, but I've been waiting to experience it ever since Dead Broke sent us a few records a while back in Spring 2009. Well, the whole thing took me completely by surprise. On Huber Lane, there is a realm that is too familiar but more cozy and somehow more important than anything I could have ever expected. As you walked to the house, you could barely tell anything was happening there except for the fact that there were a dozen cars parked outside. As you enter "Dead Broke HQ", there is a kind of painting on the wall that is absolutely reminiscent of Brooklyn DIY. Inside; a bunch of kids who escape the terrible wasteland of Suburbia to listen to some surprisingly decent punk jamz. The walls were decorated with movie posters and plaque with the Police written on it rested on the mantel of the fireplace. It was strange, but comforting and somehow hopeful for a better music scene in the suburbs.
Besides the cozy environment of this Long Island DIY "venue," there were also a handful of awesome punk bands. It's not typical "hipster" punk, if that means anything at all; but it also wasn't stereotypical Long Island pop punk that you would be expecting at any non-hardcore show on the Island. "Everything Sucks" were extremely impressive. A bunch of middle aged dudes playing music that sounds like Double Dagger, or at least if Double Dagger were a Long Island band. The singer had an energy that was comparable to Nolan Strans, but perhaps he was even more energetic and entertaining. The instrumentals aren't nearly as tight as Double Dagger, but I think they have insane potential. They are a band worth listening to and undoubtedly, a band worth seeing live.
I think this is definitely a better grasp on something happening on Long Island. I know it's a bit late, but it's here and it exists and it's definitely worth including in your article if you have time to include it.
By the way, there's a dude Mike who runs Dead Broke Rekerds out of his home. He's released stuff by Fat Lizzy, Down In The Dumps, Iron Chic, ADD/C, and they will be releasing the new record from Everything Sucks. They've also released a 7" from Screaming Females. His girlfriend curates the shows that happen there every month.
Long Island is a strange, mysterious place.
